Top Tips for the Cosiest Autumn Road Trip in Your Campervan

Summer is drawing to a close, and while July and August are always extremely popular for campervan and motorhome trips, the autumn seasons can be perfect for a road trip adventure. Here are our top tips for leaning into this gorgeous time of year.

Choose Locations That Come Alive in Autumn

Many areas close to our Preston depot have stunning scenery as the leaves change. The Lake District and Peak District have fantastic areas of red and orange foliage to admire. Further afield, autumn is a brilliant time to do the NC500 – you’ll miss the summer crowds, and the mozzies!

Slow Cook a Cosy Meal

If you want a cosy evening in on your campervan or motorhome trip, consider bringing a slow cooker.

All vehicles are supplied with an oven, hob and grill, but something about a slow cooked meal is perfect for a crisp autumn day. Plus, it creates more time for you to explore!

Most brands are very low wattage making them fine to use in your vehicle. Set it off while you enjoy your day and by the evening you could have a hearty stew, casserole, roast or chilli!

Light Up the Night

Solar powered fairy lights and battery powered candles are available in most major supermarkets and home stores. They are a lovely and safe way to make a cosy glow inside and outside of your campervan or motorhome.

Make the Most of No Baggage Limit

One of the best things about motorhomes and campervans is you don’t have the baggage limit of flights. So you can pack as many cosy blankets, decorations and jumpers as you like.

Embrace Slow Living

There is nothing cosier than curling up, looking out of your window at beautiful autumn scenery while your kettle starts to whistle on the hob to tell you your coffee is nearly ready. Make the most of the slower pace that autumn provides – there’s no rush to beat the crowds to the best spots on your journey so you can relax and enjoy your day at your own pace.

Travel Inspiration: Montenegro Roadtrip

Discover Montenegro’s Hidden Gems on Four Wheels

Are you dreaming of an unforgettable adventure that combines breathtaking landscapes, rich history, and the freedom of the open road? Montenegro, a jewel in the Balkans, offers all this and more. And there’s no better way to explore its diverse beauty than by hiring a motorhome from Motorhome Rent UK. Here’s why a motorhome road trip around Montenegro should be at the top of your travel list this year.

Why Choose a Motorhome for Your Montenegro Adventure?

  1. Ultimate Freedom and Flexibility: With a motorhome, you’re not tied down to a strict itinerary. Feel like spending an extra day by the stunning Bay of Kotor or exploring the ancient streets of Budva? No problem. Your schedule is your own to create and adjust as you go.
  2. Comfort and Convenience: Modern motorhomes are equipped with all the comforts of home, including cozy beds, fully equipped kitchens, and spacious living areas. You can prepare your meals, relax in your own space, and have everything you need at your fingertips.
  3. Cost-Effective Travel: Traveling by motorhome can be more budget-friendly than you might think. You save on accommodation costs, dining out, and the flexibility means you can choose more affordable campsites or even wild camp where it’s permitted.
  4. Immersive Experience: Staying in a motorhome allows you to immerse yourself in the local culture and environment. Wake up to the sound of waves on a secluded beach or enjoy a sunrise over the mountains – experiences that are priceless and often missed when staying in traditional hotels.

Must-See Destinations in Montenegro

  1. Bay of Kotor: Often described as Europe’s southernmost fjord, the Bay of Kotor is a breathtaking blend of dramatic cliffs and crystal-clear waters. Explore the UNESCO-listed old town of Kotor, with its winding streets, historic buildings, and stunning views from the city walls.
  2. Durmitor National Park: This UNESCO World Heritage site is a paradise for nature lovers. With towering peaks, glacial lakes, and dense forests, Durmitor offers endless opportunities for hiking, climbing, and wildlife spotting.
  3. Budva: Known for its vibrant nightlife and beautiful beaches, Budva is a perfect blend of modernity and history. Stroll through the old town, relax on the sandy shores, or enjoy the lively atmosphere in the evenings.
  4. Sveti Stefan: This tiny islet, connected to the mainland by a narrow causeway, is one of Montenegro’s most iconic images. While the island itself is an exclusive resort, the nearby beaches are public and offer stunning views.
  5. Lake Skadar: The largest lake in the Balkans, Lake Skadar is a haven for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts. Take a boat trip to explore its myriad of channels and islands, or simply relax by the water’s edge and enjoy the tranquility.

Tips for Your Motorhome Journey

  1. Plan Your Route: While the beauty of a motorhome trip is the freedom it offers, having a rough itinerary can help ensure you don’t miss any highlights. Use online resources and travel guides to map out your must-see destinations.
  2. Check Campsites and Facilities: Montenegro has a growing number of campsites catering to motorhomes. Research and book in advance during peak seasons to ensure you have a spot in the best locations.
  3. Learn Local Driving Rules: Familiarize yourself with Montenegro’s driving regulations. Roads can be narrow and winding, especially in mountainous areas, so take your time and drive safely.
  4. Pack Wisely: Make sure you have all the essentials for your trip, including a first-aid kit, camping equipment, and plenty of supplies. While towns and villages have shops, having a well-stocked motorhome will save you time and hassle.

Traveling by motorhome allows you to explore at your own pace, discover hidden gems, and experience the local culture up close.

Route Overview

Your journey will cover the three major lakes: Garda, Maggiore, and Como. Here’s a suggested itinerary:

  1. Lago di Garda
  2. Lago Maggiore
  3. Lago di Como

Let’s dive into the details of each stop!

1. Lago di Garda: The Jewel of Northern Italy

  • Bellagio: Drive up to Bellagio, often called the “Pearl of Lake Como.” Wander through its charming streets, enjoy a meal at a lakeside restaurant, and take in the panoramic views.
  • Varenna: Visit Varenna, a picturesque village with colorful houses and a beautiful lakeside walkway. Don’t miss the Castello di Vezio and the stunning gardens of Villa Monastero.

Practical Tips for Your Motorhome Adventure

  1. Plan Your Route: While spontaneity is part of the charm, having a basic route planned will help ensure you don’t miss any must-see attractions.
  2. Book Campsites in Advance: Especially during peak season, it’s wise to book your campsites ahead to secure a spot.
  3. Local Driving Laws: Familiarize yourself with Italian road rules and regulations. Remember, tolls are common on Italian highways.
  4. Pack Essentials: Make sure your motorhome is stocked with essentials like food, water, and camping gear. Many areas around the lakes are remote, and you won’t want to be caught unprepared.
